Got some new toys!

This past week I have been saving up for some new gear for photography and climbing. I just recently acquired a Blue Water Lighting Pro 9.6mm/70m (Work Horse Rope), A 3/4 set of CCH Alien Cams Orange and down, and a set of Alien Hybrids. On the photo side I thought it was crucial to get another camera body, because you defiantly need two SLR Bodies for Wedding's (Canon 5D Mark II), and I got these two radio units from Pocket Wizard called the Mini TT1 and Flex TT5, this enables me to shoot faster than 250th of a second in in ETTL mode. So far I have a few wedding's lined up and a few projects coming close on, now I got's the Equip. to help me do so.

Spring Trip 2009

More photo's of the spring trip.

Boulder Canyon

Felt like poop today but went climbing anyways, here is a photo of my dog Abby getting ready to cross Boulder Creek.

The Vampire

My good buddy Matt Kennedy sent me some photo's of the Ice Cave Route in Aspen, Co. I decided to call it The Vampire, I decided not to grade the route, I climbed it because it was soooooo sick looking.

Spring Trip 2009

Day 1: Wake up early morning to see Indian Creek for the first time after driving the night before, Beautiful! This will be my first trip to and area of Traditional Splitter climbing. Curt and I head over to the Blue Gramma Wall just after a bagel that consists of Swiss Cheese, Avocado, Bacon, Egg and Onion Cream Cheese. First Curt begins to teach me how to make these things called Tape Gloves? and then Curt leads a 5.9 corner crack for us to warm up on and me to learn the ways of Hand Jammin... After a bit of struggling I began to get more of an idea of what to do. About a hour after warming up, Paul, Adrian, and Amos head up to the crag, now well almost have the full crew. After the day is over, Hayden and Eric show up just before dark to get a few routes in. Hayden starts off by nearly soloing the 5.9 I top roped, he put his first piece of gear in about 8 feet from the anchors!... jesus! on a 60 foot route. On our way back to the car Paul convinces Hayden that Blue Gramma 5.11 is a 5.10a and he should try and onsite it. Hayden gets on the route, he is struggling, screaming and barely sends the route, Paul says the route was 5.11 and Hayden is like damn you sand bagging son of a bitch! End of day 1.

Day 2: Waking up to a dust storm! enough about that, now we head to The Optimator Wall, I do my first 5.8 lead, this is a Chimney route and it was one of the best sends of the trip. Later that day I see this beautiful crack climb that starts at #3's and narrows down to .5 BD Cams, I struggle a lot on the first 15 feet then the rest of the route went as if someone set a fire under my ass. As the day continued it began to Snow Dirt! but still able to climb. I would say that the most painful thing about that day would be looking up and catching Dirt Snow directly into the eye socket "SHART SNOW"

Day 3: Battle of the Bulge, Generic Crack 10a now I'm starting to get the hang of this crack jammin stuff, this crack is #1's and #2's which is perfect for me, so I decide to run a train on this thing to I can get the hands dialed. I take a short walk over to Air Sweden 5.13-, I feel that on one of my next trips to The Creek I would be able to concur this beast, but in the mean time I need to get more finger crack skills.

Day 4: Rest day, Get addicted to Nutella, Curt heads to the car wash to get the Travel Quest "TQ" clean off from all the "SHART SNOW", and buy another #2 Cam, and this girl Meg talks about a Spanish to English Dictionary she bought so she can learn? she say's "it does Spanish to English and English to Spanish, Visa Versa" I say "So your back where you started?" Huh......Interesting conversations us climbers have on a rest day.

Day 5: Tower Day at the Bridger Jacks, Easter Tower 10c. Pitch one #3 Master-Cam to #3 BD Cams, Pitch two 10c drilled holes with star drives and pitons "Sketchy", but my trusty Five Ten Velcro Anasazi's are keeping me on the rock.

Day 6: Way Rambo Wall, after warming up on Blue Sun 10B I try to take a stab at Way Rambo 5.12a, everyone tells me that this route is perfect for my size of fingers.... I soon figure out that .075 crack is not for me and I head over back to Blue Sun and scope out this Project to the left in a corner, it would take #0 Master-Cams for 30 feet, then a #00 before the crux and back to #0 and then to #1 Master-Cam after the crux. I got on it on top rope and by my surprise I Flashed It! but after a fews runs, I decided to come back on a later trip to try it placing gear, due to the fatigue I was having that day.

Day 7: Battle of The Bulge, headed up and got on Wavy Gravy for a warm up then over to Big Guy 5.11+, this route is mostly #5 BD cams or a Short Person's Worst Dream.... I got on Big Guy after Hayden sent it with style or as some would say "Slayed it". As I step out on to the super wide crack I soon realized that if I was ever going to send this thing, I am going to have to lay back the crack the whole way and transition back into the crack with Butterfly Scissors hand jams and put in a leg almost to the hip and get a no hands to put in a cam, then back out on the face for some more lay backing, This will be a very hard transition.

Day 8: Dinner and Showers! full rest day with no climbing.

Day 9: Jane Fonda's Total Body Workout 5.11, well the name says it all! I just explain how the climb went for me, first off it took me like 5 different tries to figure out how I am going to climb up the first 15 feet of vagina looking crack, ends up being some scissor legging, palm pressing and body flared chimning? sound fun? then after you get your self up and out, it starts into weird hands from .075 to #2, then to .075 again and then to fists at the top for 40 feet. I would say I got a Total Body Work Out from that crack..... Blaaaaahhhh!

Day 10: Super Crack Buttress, headed up there to get in Incredible Hand Crack and Super Crack. First thing warm up on the most beautiful crack I have seen, The Incredible Hand Crack, Super Sick! Pack a chew and head over to Super Crack another magnificent! climb, to bad my hands don't fit #3's very well, it was a full value climb for Curt, his hands fit well in #3's. Today is soooooooo Hot, every heads over to the cave next to Anasazi to chill for a while and run some laps till the temps get cooler. After Anasazi Hayden wants to get on Fingers in a Light Socket 5.12a, which doesn't fit his hands to well, I decide to take a stab at it and flash it on top rope, I will also save this route for my next trip to lead.

Day 11: Drive to Red Rock NV, set up the tent and begin to Dual with a Mini Scorpion, I won that battle!

Day 12: Wake up in Red Rocks, me, Curt, Christian, and Laura head to Black Velvet Canyon to get on Heart of Darkness and we took the wrong trail and ended up being a 3 hour hike bush whacking, I also encountered a small Rattler and was lucky that I had not got bit. Finally we get on Heart of Darkness, but only able to climb the first two pitches due to the lack of sun left.

Day 13: Calico Hills Craggin, out on there at the Crack of Noon, shooting photo's of Laura on some climbs and then headed up to this roof crack that laura wanted to try, and lastly shoot some more photo's of Curt and Christian on a 5.9+ off width chimney.

Day 14: Black Velvet Canyon, back to this canyon again.... found the right trail this time. Me, Curt, Laura, and Christian all sent Triassic Sands 5.10b and 4 star multi pitch. then after that headed down the gully in the wash lies Wet Dream v12, I gave this thing some tries, I felt that I could have done it in a few tries but I also did not bring a pad......

Day 15: Tunnel Vision 5.8+ 4 star route, first pitch with a Shart Traverse then into a run out Chimney for 6 feet to a rad tunnel section were you start the climb on one end and come out on the other side with minimal gear, I leed most of the pitches and curt got to lead the Tunnel Pitch, after I follow through.... I said to Curt "Here is the Piece of gear Laura and Christian gave me and here is the Piece you placed" Just kind of Run Out, only one piece for 120 feet.

Day 16: Calico HIlls Craggin, warming up to fail......... I'll just leave it at that. Me and Curt headed to the Strip in Vegas to spend the last night there, we stayed at the Tropicana, got hammered and passed out by 1 am.

Day 17: Drive Home.
